Q: Can you tell me about the Family Literacy program
Garfield Community Adult School has at Eastside Learning Center?
A:

Garfield Community Adult School has provided a comprehensive family literacy program at Eastside Learning Center for over a decade. In fact, it was in 1993 that the Los Angeles Unified School District's Board of Education approved the construction of a family literacy and children's center. The program consists of adult education (ESL, GED, high school diploma), parent education, parent and child together classes, and educational opportunities for children.

 

Q: I heard the Family Literacy program at the Eastside Learning Center is closing down. Is this true?
A:

No, the program is not closing down. In fact, First 5 LA recently awarded Garfield Community Adult School a $650,000 family literacy grant to enhance services.

 

Q: Is the Family Literacy program at Eastside Learning Center part of Los Angeles Unified School District?
A:

Yes, the program is wholly operated by Los Angeles Unified School District's Division of Adult and Career Education.

 

Q: How is Eastside Learning Center's Family Literacy program funded?
A:

The program is funded through a combination of federal and state public education funds and grants.

 

Q: Is FLASC part of Los Angeles Unified School District?
A:

No, FLASC is not part of Los Angeles Unified School District. It is a private 501(c) 3 not-for-profit corporation.

 

Q: What is FLASCs involvement with Eastside Learning Center's Family Literacy program?
A:

FLASC is no longer involved, in any way, with the Family Literacy program at Eastside Learning Center. FLASC previously provided support, during the evening, for the children's component of the program under an agreement that expired on May 31, 2005.
